How to Bake a Tetris Cake

No matter what the occasion is, baking a Tetris cake can be a fun and delicious way to celebrate!

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, special occasion, or simply have a hungering for something sweet, cake is the perfect treat to brighten anyone’s day. Aside from cakes having a plethora of different flavor combinations to choose from, there are also a multitude of ways to decorate a cake.

If you’re looking to expand your cake decorating skills, why not bake a Tetris-themed cake? To keep things simple, we put together a quick guide that will help you bake the perfect Tetris cake! The first step when it comes to baking a Tetris cake is planning. Think about what kind of cake and icing flavors you’d like.

Depending on your baking skills, would you prefer to cut out 7 individual Tetrimino cake pieces, or would you rather add Tetris flair to the top portion of your cake as a whole? Furthermore, how many people will be eating this cake? By answering these questions, you’ll be better prepared when it comes time to head out and purchase supplies.

Speaking of which, you’ll need the following supplies before you can begin the cake baking process:

  • One or more boxes of cake mix (in your choice of flavor)
  • Ingredients listed on the back of your cake mix box (oil, eggs, etc.)
  • Icing (in your choice of flavor)
  • A large baking pan
  • Mixing bowl
  • A cake spatula (to evenly spread your icing)
  • Decorative toppings (icing, sprinkles, candies, etc.)

Once you’ve purchased your supplies, set them up in your kitchen so that everything is within easy reach. Next, take a look at the box of cake mix you’ve purchased. Most boxes of cake mix are easy to make, which is great if you’re new to baking or are on a time crunch.

On the back of your cake mix box, you’ll find the ingredients and steps listed out.

Typically, these steps will tell you to preheat your oven to 350 degrees, then blend your cake mix with water, oil, and eggs. Next, spray your pan with nonstick baking spray, then evenly distribute your cake mix into the pan. Ensure your oven has finished the preheating process, then place your pan in the oven and follow the bake time specified for the pan size you are using.

Be sure to check on your cake as it’s baking. To determine whether or not your cake is done, insert a toothpick in the center and if it comes out clean, it’s finished. Remove your finished cake from the oven, then set it out of the way to cool. If you have young children or pets, be sure to place your cooling cake in an area where they cannot reach it.

With your cake cooling, you can prepare your icing and decorations. Once you’ve determined your cake is cool, it’s time to get decorating. First, you should quickly run over your intended design in your head. For example, if you baked a square cake and intend to cut it into 7 Tetriminos, make sure you have a tray big enough to hold each of these pieces while you decorate them.

Be sure you have a tray big enough to hold all 7 of your Tetrimino cakes!

Depending on how big you plan to cut them, you can always follow similar steps to the ones found in our Tetris cookies article! In terms of decorating your Tetriminos, one easy way to make them look nice is to apply a layer of white icing, then apply sprinkles in the official Tetris colors on top of the icing.

Finally, add a single candle (in a matching color if you can) to each of the 7 Tetriminos! On the other hand, if you’re planning to keep the cake whole as you decorate it, make sure you take the cake’s proportions into consideration before adding your decorations. First, you’ll want to ice your cake. Then, add Tetriminos using special decorative icing.

Decorating your Tetriminos can be tricky, so be sure to take your time.

If you’re planning to insert candles, this should be done last. Be sure to space out your candles so that they don’t mess up your Tetris decorations. The way you choose to decorate your Tetris cake is entirely up to you. There are plenty of ways to make a one-of-a-kind Tetris cake, so put on your creative thinking cap and give it a go.
